How to turn a photo into a seamlessly tiled texture

In this short post I will show you how to easily turn a photo into a seamlessly tiled texture with just three clicks. I will be using GIMP that is a free and open source software for image editing.

Here we have a beautiful free texture of grass. We want to use it as a background. However if we just tile the image as is, the result isn’t very good. The sides are not seamless and the resulting image is bumpy.

The easiest and fastest way to make an image seamless is using a “Make seamless” filter in GIMP. Just import your picture into GIMP and apply a Map Filter like this:
gimp_tiles
Go to Filters and choose Filters -> Map -> Make Seamless. That’s it! Here’s the resulting seamlessly tiled image:

Wow! I didn’t knew this really easy solution. Best way is using clone stamp tool to make your texture then apply this effect for finishing!

This is a great tip – and a great feature of GIMP.
One question though – how would you even out the lighting of the bright spot in the grass?
To making the tiling less noticable.
