How to turn a photo into a seamlessly tiled texture

In this short post I will show you how to easily turn a photo into a seamlessly tiled texture with just three clicks. I will be using GIMP that is a free and open source software for image editing.

Here we have a beautiful free texture of grass. We want to use it as a background. However if we just tile the image as is, the result isn’t very good. The sides are not seamless and the resulting image is bumpy.

The easiest and fastest way to make an image seamless is using a “Make seamless” filter in GIMP. Just import your picture into GIMP and apply a Map Filter like this:

Go to Filters and choose Filters -> Map -> Make Seamless. That’s it! Here’s the resulting seamlessly tiled image:
